Braman’s Baths opens.

July 23, 1827

Built by the state and operated by Jarvis Braman, the 150-square-foot pool is located at the foot of Chestnut Street. The first swimming pool in the U.S., it offers swimming classes to students that include John James Audubon and John Quincy Adams, who, first as Secretary of State and then as President, takes a daily nude swim in the Potomac until a body is found floating in the river nearby.
